The documeentary "BUY or Die" closely examines the sitution of malnutrition and hunger in the country after a decade of right to food case which was filed in 2001 in the indian supreme court by the people's Union of civil Liberties, Rajasthanto seek legal enforcement of the right to food. The case was filed after reports of widespread starvation deaths in the state of rajastanand other parts of the country during early 2000s, despite 60 million tons of grain were rotting in the food corporation of india's go downs while people were going without food. The supreme court has created a framework for what schemes under food and social security would mean in terms of government delivering it to the people. Supreme court orders specially related to cooked meals in schols, Integrated child development scheme and public distribution systemmade significant difference by converting them into entitlements by saying that none of these can be withdrawn or reduced without the permission of the court. The right to food case is not just a series of 100 orders; it has also emerged as a galvanizing point to thousands of food right campaigners who are trying for the enactment of alegislation which would make right food a fundamental right. It is one of the most significant cases of socio economic rights and justiceability which has no other parallel anywhere in the world. It has been hailed globally as a judicial landmark which has forced the Indian government to initiate National Food Security Act (NFSA) with the realization that food security is central to any fight against poverty and chronic hunger in india.
