It appears regularly on the pages of all the major newspapers, news programs, and on countless blogs and social media across the political spectrum. This wide popularization of the term is recent. But the phenomenon of gaslighting itself has long been part of our everyday lives. Even the term dates back to a 1938 play, "Gas Light", in which the main antagonist tries to make his spouse lose her mind so he can steal her jewels.
